Just getting back into rendering again, at least for a while. So much new stuff for DAZ! I found out I have 3.1 GB of assets. Now to start collecting stuff compatible with Genesis 2, but I have so much V4 stuff (and V3 and A3!) that I might work there for a while.

Well I might have found my perfect game dev platform. It is called Stencyl, and has the right balance of control and real programming. The tutorials I tried this afternoon were great, it got me into trying to figure out how to make characters / game assets in Inkscape very quickly. I was really glad to find the output to Icon templates that Inkscape has, and turning on the grid automatically gave me the division I wanted.

If you know of anyone who has free (or someday, cheap) assets or tile/characters whatever for Stencyl or other platforms, let me know!

Was playing with Inkscape again today and felt like I had to relearn everything just to draw a shaded sphere. Turns out there is a lot of complexity to good, shaded spheres :) I thought about how I could learn a lot about Inkscape by writing a good set of tutorials of how to use it, but I decided to check out the actual Inkscape manual. I'm very impressed. I've now gone through the first two Inkscape tutorials. I didn't learn anything worth shouting about, but I did learn some basics and its good to get those down right away.

I've always been interested in programming, and I do quite a bit of it at work. I'm the kind of guy who would love to program a game, but not the kind of guy that has any good ideas about what to write. I do have a character in mind at the moment however.

I've also been interested in ways to teach non-computer people how to program. One of the ways to do that is the current wave of drag-and-drop or visual programming. I've looked briefly at a few, and the one I'm interested in right now is GameSalad. Sounds simple enough at first, but it has quite a lot of complexity it seems. I'm just getting started, and I can't wait to get in on some tutorials.

So for the next little while I'm looking for free graphics and sprites to use in a non-commercial, personal use game I might make. Let me know if you do that kind of thing.

E-learning

It has been over 2 years since my last journal entry so I figured I should say something! I'm on the verge of combining my many online personas but realize that sometimes that is not a good idea!

At the moment I'm on the lookout for textures to use in e-learning modules (not for profit) as well as tutorials to generate tutorials. Still want to learn more about Photoshop and Illustrator, but I have a feeling that will always be the case :)
